Lesson Summary: Students will create a picture or design using cut-paper lines.

Purpose: Students will discover the way line creates movement in art.

Materials: 12” x 18” construction paper in various colors, black, and white, colored construction paper strips, glue stick, pencils (for names only), access to a paper cutter, scissors (optional)

Review: Line (definition), dimension

New Vocabulary/Concepts: Direction, movement, horizontal, vertical, diagonal

Time: One or two periods

Possible Visual Aids: Jasper Johns’s Three Flags, Shosun’s Birds in Bamboo Tree, works by Piet Mondrian, such as Composition, 1913
